Hello Renegades!

As I mentioned yesterday, we're in our final week of "One More..." topics. So, as we've shared sneak peeks throughout the campaign, here's one more peek at the cool stuff Eric and team have created for this game...

And don't forget to spread the word! We need a big push to finish strong in this final week, so let's give it all we've got!

 Ankara, Turkey

Eric, here. As we near the end of our Kickstarter campaign, I offer you one last sneak peek. This time, we’re showcasing one of the four settings from the core book. Ankara is the home of two powerful conspiracies duking it out for control over the city. Darwin, Australia is a complex ecology of conspiracies, each one of them as likely to be prey for the others as predator. Connellsville, Pennsylvania is a quiet little coal-mining town with a terrible secret, overseen as it is by a pharmaceutical company that sells the Remade it produces to other conspiracies. And Newark, Delaware is a college town whose university hosts Progenitors as guest lecturers. Backers will get to see all four settings, in their entirety (this preview is a mere fragment of one such setting), on Tuesday. But for everyone else, we hope you will enjoy this preview and consider backing us.

Anchored Realities

For the Remade, Ankara is a place of inexplicable phenomena and underlying threat. It is a city, yes, and a place of human conspirators who would twist and pervert the minds and bodies of their victims, much like anywhere else. Ankara is subtly wrong, though, to the wary eye. Little glitches are everywhere in the urban sprawl. Streets that don’t join together quite right, stairways leading up to nothing, park benches contorted into an isolating closed circle amid a copse of utility poles. A Baseline might shrug it off as the result of Ankara’s explosion beyond its original planned layout. Remade know better.

Ankara is a place where reality’s many layers are pressed close together. Energy membranes, folded dimensions of raw power, or information tucked alongside the world, are crushed that little bit nearer and are more prone to bleeding out into the space that humans can perceive. Alien realms of ephemera and capering jinn are but a breath away. Strange echoes of the city, stillborn versions that never were, and tumbled Escher nightmares hidden behind rarely-trod alleys, push and gnaw at the corners of its urban landscape.

Most Remade are in no position to explain the city’s phantasmal permeability. The Onachus apostate Kelebek likely knows a great deal, but demands a high price for her counsel. Other Renegades spend their time and energy on avoiding the prying eyes of the conspiracies and planning avenues of counterattack. For their day-to-day survival, it is more important to understand the effects of Ankara than its causes. Never climb the stairways-to-nowhere under a new moon. Don’t cross covered parts of the Ankara Çayı waterway if you can hear strange whispers. Steer clear of the power substations when the evening sky is red. A body of superstitions and taboos, shared among Remade and their allies, builds a little further whenever a Deviant takes a wrong turning and ends up lost in hungry, alien streets for one frightful night.

Still, some Broken refuse to sit down and just accept that Ankara is a bleeding wound of eldritch energy. Driven by an obsessive need to understand the urban arcana of the city, or intending to turn Ankara against their enemies, such Remade record, plot and calculate patterns of intrusions into the world. An irregular storm of interference dips out of unseen dimensions to drench electrics in static and blow fuses across several blocks, so figure out the pattern behind its appearance, and the Renegade can launch an attack when a conspiracy’s agents will be deprived of modern surveillance and communications. With a Vigilance Society cadre in hot pursuit, a desperate Deviant takes the forbidden left-right-left turn into the gecekondu shanty, preferring to risk running the dusty streets of the ‘other city’ where the psychic Devoted will refuse to follow.

If the Remade are largely in the dark as to the causes of Ankara’s state, Progenitors have an overabundance of theories. Attempts to explain the liminal nature of the region include a claim that it was the test site for a reality-distorting bomb detonated by some ancient civilization — the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great is a popular choice of culprit — or that a meteoric impact involving exotic elements had a similar effect. One Turkish researcher notoriously disappeared after briefly making a big splash in the internet conspiracy-theory community. He claimed to have scientific measurements indicating a catastrophic future event, its effects so intense as to ripple backwards through the fabric of space-time.

Others point to the Tree of Life on Republic Coins and claim Ankara is one of the places where the roots of the Tree writhe through the world. Midas is another common theme, as the transmutative powers and bestial traits ascribed to the Phrygian king might indicate he was a Deviant, a Progenitor, or both. There’s at least one contorted theory that the Gordian knot was in Ankara, not nearby Gordium, and that it was no simple bundle of string but rather a thread of dimensional stability that Alexander’s sword split apart.

Some would-be Progenitors come to Ankara following old leads — myths of Midas, the Onachus, or the recovered texts of now-dead Ottoman-era conspiracies. More arrive due to modern inquiries. Anomalous results at a research foundation’s lab attracts a top scientist, or enough urban legends about jinn in the electrics catch the attention of a petty sorcerer. Certain methodologies of Divergence are much easier and safer to undertake in Ankara’s malleable reality than elsewhere. The city is like a honey-trap for Progenitors.

Those who work independently or as part of a minor conspiracy usually don’t realize their danger until it’s too late. The Onachus and the Vigilance Society guard against mere dabblers in the secret side of the world, and they consider Progenitors operating outside their remit as pests or threats. The lucky ones are driven off. A rare few are given offers they cannot refuse. The conspiracies murder most who fall into their spotlight, and whisk their projects away for analysis. Most Ankaran Renegades are the Remade of these minor Progenitors caught in the city’s web.

Shadow War

Two mighty conspiracies dominate in Ankara. The Onachus wield tremendous occult power, while the Vigilance Society draw on the darkest recesses of the military-industrial complex.

Onachus

Standing: 7

Principles: The soul is the path to true human evolution; breaches in the world are both threat and opportunity; benevolence towards humanity through hidden guidance.

Virtue: Zeal

Vice: Arrogance

Attributes: Power 8, Finesse7, Resistance 5

Conspiracy Actions:4

Association: 8

Hierarchal Node: The Board

Temporal Nodes: Altin Finance Global, The Assessors, Breach Response Unit, Rassiter Foundation, Onachus Devoted

Exploitative Nodes: Bektashi Materials Research, IMINT/SIGINT Analysts, Legal Retainer Team, Nar Alhaqiqa, Suborned Judges

Structural Nodes: Galatia Transport International, Rassiter Holdings, Ulus Information & Insight, Yıldırım Security

Icons: Alarum, Breach Suppression Technologies, Location Isolator, Onachus Divergence, Rassiter Analysis Protocols

Rassiter Foundation:This is a sprawling private foundation of laboratories, scientific research projects, and some associated charitable fronts.

Rassiter Analysis Protocols: The Rassiter Foundation’s occult scientists have refined the Protocols over the decades. Agents of the Node enjoy the rote quality on Academics, Occult, and Science rolls when locating and investigating interstitial breaches and breakdowns in reality.

Breach Response Unit: This network of highly trained agents equipped to deal with breach incidents and Deviants.

Breach Suppression Technologies: As an automatic conspiracy action, the Node can equip up to six Baseline agents with barely-understood occult devices that replicate the effects of seven Scar-free Magnitude of Variations. Each agent may have only one Variation at a time, although any number of agents can share the same Variation. For example, three agents could have Otherworldly Connection (Escherfolk) 4, while two others have Precognition 1, and the sixth has Hypercompetence (Occult) 1. This equipment lasts until the end of the chapter.

IMINT/SIGINT Analysts: Onachus have their tendrils in several European intelligence agencies, which they use to track down those of interest to the Onachus who have made it especially difficult to find them

Location Isolator: As a Complexity 10 downtime action Onachus can pinpoint the location of anyone one of the Onachus Devoted has encountered to within ten miles, anywhere in the world.

Yıldırım Security:This ethically-flexible but ever-vigilant Node protects the conspiracy’s holdings.

Alarum: Calling upon additional security, the Node reinforces the conspiracy against enemy attacks. Once per chapter, armed agents of the conspiracy arrive to deal with an attack or intrusion on another Node, or armed agents already present gain the Informed Condition regarding the attackers during the current scene. If a rival conspiracy attempts the sabotage or war action against Onachus, reduce the damage it deals in the current chapter by one.

Others: The Boardruns the conspiracy. Altin Finance Global, a major international company, supplies the funds needed to keep the whole operation functioning. The Assessors serve as both emissaries and recruiters, seeking out those with the qualities required of the Onachus Devoted. The Exploitative Nodes of the Onachus include Bektashi Materials Research, the exotic materials laboratory that performs the actual Onachus Divergence itself — a unique Divergence methodology that produces incredibly potent Deviants. The other Nodes are the conspiracy’s fearsome Legal Retainer Team, the old-boys-network of Suborned Judges and other legal professionals, and the faith group organizers of Nar Alhaqiqa. Finally, the Structural Nodes that provide the conspiracy with a backbone of organization include a series of companies who move Onachus personnel and goods around (Galatia Transport International), serve as a front for property ownership (Rassiter Holdings), and maintain its grip on surveillance and oversight in areas of Ankara (Ulus Information & Insight).

Vigilance Society

Standing: 7

Principles: Protect the Turkish Republic against all threats; knowledge is power; only we know enough to judge what is truly a threat.

Virtue: Vigilant

Vice: Paranoid

Attributes: Power 6, Finesse 8, Resistance 6

Conspiracy Actions:4

Association: 9

Hierarchal Node: Special Security Response Council

Temporal Nodes: 2nd Army 4th Corps Secondments, Eiraf Archive, Eiraf Devoted, Emergency Operations Task Force, Vigilance Threat Analysis

Exploitative Nodes: Explosives Response Team, General Directorate of Security, Ministry of Finance, MİT Surveillance Operations

Structural Nodes: Black Helicopters, Eiraf Research Program, Quartermasters, Special Assignments Recruitment Program, Vigilance Threat Analysis Security Corps

Icons: Eiraf Surveillance Network, Noah Reactor, Sensory Augmentation Tank, Watcher Protocol

Eiraf Archive: This provides a growing body of research and lore that fuels the Society’s efforts.

The Watcher Protocol: Via the elaborate calculations of the Watcher Protocol,an advanced predictive A.I. created by the communal efforts of conspiracy Cephalists, all Society agents (not just those attached to the MIT) gain the 8-again quality on all Investigation and Streetwise rolls and achieve an exceptional success on three successes instead of five.

Eiraf Devoted:Operating closely with the Archive, the Society assigns its most trusted Psychics to this Node.

Eiraf Surveillance Network: Society Devoted can network themselves together in conspiracy laboratories. Devoted of this Node can use teamwork to bolster each other’s Scar Finesse rolls for Cephalist Variations.

The Emergency Operations Task Force: Tasked, on paper, with monitoring emergencies and notifying the public of them, this Node’s agents guard and operate the Noah Reactor.

The Noah Reactor: This device can generate a large-scale but seemingly natural cataclysm anywhere in the world, which the Society uses to trigger an emergency declaration in Turkey or to attack the nation’s enemies abroad, requiring a Complexity 10 downtime action.

Vigilance Threat Analysis: This counterterrorism analysis and response group is an official organ of the Turkish government wholly under the Society’s direction.

Sensory Augmentation Tank: The Node’s agents enjoy a Scar-free Magnitude 1 Variation that enhances their senses, grants some form of remote viewing, or provides prophetic powers. All agents receive the same benefit during a given chapter, but the Society can change this Variation as a Complexity 1 downtime action.

Others: The Hierarchical Node atop the Vigilance Society appears on official paperwork only as the Special Security Response Council, an overlooked governmental committee with surprisingly broad, sweeping powers in emergency situations. The conspiracy has direct command over the 2nd Army 4thCorps Secondments stationed in Ankara. It draws on the MİT Surveillance Operations, and the Ministry of Finance for additional resources in a less official capacity, and conspiracy infiltration into the General Directorate of Security gives the conspiracy significant influence over the civilian police force. The Explosives Response Team has infiltrated law enforcement bomb squads, using their authority to evacuate areas under the guise of a bomb threat or set off explosions either as tools of assassination or in order to blame a desired scapegoat. The Eiraf Research Programserves as an intermediary between the Special Security Response Council and its research Nodes. Other Structural Nodes include a transport fleet of military vehicles and Black Helicopters, the various suborned Quartermastersin the Turkish Land Forces and MİT (who keep the flow of supplies going), and the Vigilance Threat Analysis Security Detachment that protects Society holdings. The Special Assignments Recruitment Program is the backbone of the conspiracy, sifting through military and civilian records in search of suitable candidates for membership—either patriotic and paranoid soldiers who might find a place in the conspiracy’s hierarchy, or those expressing the signs of psychic potential and the possibility of surviving Divergence.

FINAL WEEK!
over 4 years ago – Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 07:42:11 AM

Hello Renegades!

"Scientific" Concierge!

We're about to  start our FINAL WEEK countdown! We've come far in the past 21 days - funding the project, unlocking eight -- no NINE Stretch Goals, sharing the majority of the manuscript - but there's so much further we can go in this final week!

At this part of every campaign I urge everyone to Be An Ambassador - spread the word about the campaign, share your excitement on social media and in your social circles, and let everyone know that not only is this campaign nearing the end, but it's definitely one you want everyone to jump on! Let people know what the parts are that excite you! Encourage them to read the previews and updates, and check out the various interviews we've shared (including the recent OnyxPathcast interview with the awesome Eric, our Deviant Developer!)

The ONE MORE Phase of the Campaign

We're in the "One More" Phase of the campaign. In this FINAL WEEK, we've got:

  • One more sneak peek Preview to share to get you hooked
  • One more fiction piece in Spider's story
  • One more manuscript download to post
  • One more section to add to our Clades Companion supplement

So, should we work to hit One More Stretch Goal before the end?

NO!

Let's get two more! Three more! Six more Stretch Goals!!

"But James," you say, "We've just hit 200% of our funding target! Could we even dream of more than that? I've already committed as much as I can to this project!"

I thank you for that. You are all, indeed, awesome. I'm not looking for our existing backers to add more funds - I'm looking to add more backers to our project and earn us ALL additional rewards! We need to recruit additional supporters and bring them into our cause, increasing overall funding and knocking out more Stretch Goals.

But, maybe even more importantly, sharing this awesome game and building an even bigger community of people who will be playing Deviant: The Renegades in the years to come!

Be an Ambassador

I know, this is something I've already said many times (and seem to say during every project!), but for this final week, you are officially a duly-deputized ambassador for this Kickstarter project. I know I end every update post with "Keep spreading the word! Invite others to join in!" - but what does that mean, and how do you do it?

Easy answer - don't stop talking about the Deviant: The Renegades kickstarter until 12:01 PM EDT next Thursday -October 17- (when the campaign has ended). Yes, family and friends are tired of me talking about it (believe me!), but everything will go back to "normal" in just one week, and they've learned to tolerate me during a kickstarter campaign (for now). But here's the thing - there are others around who haven't heard or don't know about the campaign.

What Excites You?

Thumbs up to everyone who's shared a link to the kickstarter in an online forum, or posted an "I just backed this project" message to their social media - you've done all of the first steps that are critical during the first weeks of the campaign. Now, it's time to let others know why you are backing this project (and, therefore, why they should consider it as well).

That's the thing - for this final week, you don't have to tell people the kickstarter exists. Instead, tell them what's got you excited about the game. What makes this an interesting and exciting toolbox? What kind of stories will you tell? What sources of inspiration are you running with? At this point, people may have seen the "Kickstarter now live!" posts. But the ones that always pull me in are things like:

  • How to build a conspiracy that crosses over into my other Chronicles of Darkness games...
  • How to build this or that character from my favorite shows or comics ...
  • How would these abilities interact, and what Scars should I take ...

You get the idea. When I start seeing conversations that spin out of posts or ideas like that, I get intrigued about the game. And that's when I click on the link. So, share your ideas! What parts of the manuscript have stirred your imagination? What pop culture touchstones do you want to adapt for your game? What style of game are you thinking of running, and what threads from the book will you incorporate? What kinds of challenges will you throw at your players?

Again, this isn't about getting more funding and unlocking more Stretch Goals (although that's an exciting prospect!). It's about getting those fans who haven't checked it out yet to dip in and see what we're about. It's about making sure anyone who might love this game gets an opportunity to read the manuscript and start imagining stories and ideas like we have.

I get so many e-mails from people just after a campaign ends, would-be-backers who just found out a few days - or sometimes hours - too late to participate and missed out on the fun. Spread the word, share your enthusiasm, and let's get as many people on board for this project as we can.

And don't forget, if you pitch joining - all backers can pledge for $5 and check out the manuscript before deciding if they want to upgrade their pledge to include a PDF or the hardcover book. Or, if the game in the manuscript isn't for you - and it's not for everyone - then you can cancel before the campaign ends. We're not interested in tricking anyone to get you in under false pretenses - -we're not part of a larger conspiracy! We want you to want to be with us on this journey!

A LOT OF DISTRACTIONS and the ROLE OF HOBBIES

"Sure, James," you add. " I get all that. But there's A LOT going on in the world right now. A lot. It's a bit difficult discussing some hobbies when there are serious things going on..."

Oh sure, I get that. Let me take a quick diversion...

Just over two years ago, the company I had been working at for the better part of a decade went out of business. It wasn't a surprise, exactly (we were a specialty retailer in a mature product category), but it was the end of something that a lot of people had worked on for a long time, and we all felt there were still a few years (at least) left. But, sadly, events conspired against us.

So, while it wasn't necessarily a shock that we were all suddenly unemployed, it was also the realization that this fate had been hanging over our heads for the past 5 years while we worked, and that continuing to operate meant executing nearly perfectly. My friend calls this pressure "low-level radiation" - you don't even realize you're being affected until after.

I'm super lucky and fortunate, of course. I had lots of support, but still felt a bit like I'd been through the wringer. And then - at the perfect moment for me - I got to help Onxy Path with their kickstarter for Changeling: The Lost second edition. It's a Chronicles of Darkness game that deals with survival, and recovery, and rebuilding, redefining yourself and telling your own story, among many other themes.

And it came along at the perfect time for me. It spoke to some of my recent history and thoughts and, you know, helped add context and sort some stuff out. Through reading, through discussions, through playing - this game helped me sort out bits of the "serious" stuff going on in my world.

Sometimes, hobbies are just about escape; a chance to live a different life for a few hours, or explore some new themes and have fun around a table with friends. But, sometimes, they can also help you put things in order, add context, and sort through other things that may have been jumbled before.

So, to the seriousness of the world around us. Today, I'm not Lost, looking for a new definition of myself and my circumstances. I'm more rebellious, more frustrated, more ready to be... a Renegade! Again, the Chronicles of Darkness comes along at the perfect moment. As I resist the angry clickbait links and the talking heads on television paid to push my buttons, I want to push back at those who would try to get me angry and use it for their own ends.

Deviant: The Renegades is a new addition to this fun roleplaying hobby we have. It's a great escape, and a chance to build and tell stories mirroring some of our favorite fiction and characters. But it's also an opportunity to sort out some of our thoughts and explore some of the challenges that we face each day.

So, when you're thinking that friends and family may be too distracted by the events of the world, remember that this game could be speaking exactly the language they need to hear, and dealing with themes that are more relevant than they may seem at first.

And it's also a toolbox full of cool powers and difficult drawbacks and drama and action! It's still a game, after all.

So, let's jump into this final week with enthusiasm and excitement about how much bigger we can grow this! Celebrate - we're 200% funded! But let's make sure that none of our gamer friends or family misses out on the opportunity to join in and share in these extra rewards with us!

Death or Glory
over 4 years ago – Wed, Oct 09, 2019 at 06:38:11 AM

Death or Glory

Now.

In the red lights, Spider smeared the blood off his fists. His mind went back to the prison, red blood on ruddy brass. Back to where it all started. Back to when WellBeing International made him into a monster.

“We’ve gotta go,” he heard Dom saying from a million miles away. “There’s going to be more of them.”

He shook his head. “Have to make sure those guards don’t follow us,” he said, starting to turn back to his assailants.

Dom grabbed his shoulder. “No, man, you don’t… it’s fine. They aren’t… they aren’t going to come after us, man.”

“Fine. Let’s go.”

“You okay? Just that Niamh is saying she’s having trouble getting into your head now.”

Spider stalked down the hallway. “I’m fine. We’re all fine. Let’s just do this and get out, El Santo.”

“El… whatever, man.” Dom jogged to catch up to Spider’s long strides, as they made their way down the hall. Even in the red lights, Spider could see the thick purple line that twisted around corners and took him further and further into the labyrinth of the building. Once in a while, more guards would arrive, but between Dom’s strength and Spider’s rage, they weren’t problems for long. Eventually, they arrived at a heavy metal door with a simple sign on the front: VIP Visitor’s Quarters. Select Personnel Only.

Dom ripped the door off and tossed it down the hallway. The bottom of his balaclava was soaked in blood, but he didn’t bother to wipe it away. Behind the door was another door — wooden, with a brass doorknob and a frosted window, like the front door of a house. There was a simple metal frame next to the door, which held a card. On the card was a name written in neat handwriting.

Perez, Anita

“Ding dong, bitch,” Dom muttered, as he kicked in the door. Wood splinters flew everywhere as the door crashed to the ground, ripped from its hinges.

The room looked utterly out of place. The rest of the complex was one part hospital and one part laboratory — sterile concrete and lick-and-stick tile. But this room looked like a lavish hotel suite. Tasteful Swedish furniture was artfully placed all around the room. A couple of books sat on a coffee table, next to a mug. A flat screen TV hung on the wall over a fake fireplace. Past the living room was a bar with stools, and behind that was a tastefully-appointed kitchen of black and chrome. Standing at the bar was a woman with dusky skin holding a knife. She looked like she was chopping vegetables at the counter, but now turned to her intruders.

Spider hazily recognized her. He knew she was important to him, but her face felt like someone in a crowd that you see every day but don’t know by name.

“Is that her, Spider?” Dom asked next to him. He looked over his shoulder. “If so, grab her and let’s get out of here.”

The woman kept a hold on the knife, but her face grew pale. “Spider? Ernesto? Is that you?”

Memories started coming back, dripping into his mind like sap from a tree. Holding this woman’s hand as the two of them walked on a beach. Looking at wedding catalogs. Passionate nights in the bedroom. This was his wife. His wife.

Spider pulled the hood down, so she could see his face. The knife clattered to the floor. “Dios mío,” she muttered, staring at him in horror. “What have they done to you, Ernesto?”

His memories came in a slow drip, but the rage was a raging flood, wiping away all other thoughts. “What did you do? Why did you sell me out to WBI?”

“I had no choice,” she said. “You were in prison, and I couldn’t be known as the wife of a convict. But WellBeing International… they said they could get you out. Part of some program. They said they needed the spouse’s consent. I… I only did it for you!”

She was lying. She had to be lying. Spider clenched his fists harder, the metal joints popping and grinding.

“We don’t have time for this, man!” Dom screamed next to him. “I don’t know why Niamh can’t get to you, but she’s freaking out. Let’s grab her and go already!”

“No.” Spider stepped forward. “She’s not leaving here. Not ever.”

“What are you…?” Dom spun around, and saw Spider stalking toward his wife. “Oh no. No no no. This ain’t what we agreed to, man.”

The woman backed up, terrified, and Spider slowly walked toward her. “Don’t care,” he said, raising his arms. “She betrayed me. She made me into this.”

She pleaded, babbling. “No please I’m so sorry I didn’t mean it I didn’t know I didn’t know.”

Dom grabbed Spider’s arm and held him fast. “This wasn’t the plan, Spider. We need her to speak out, tell others about WBI. We can’t say shit, but she… she can go to the media, to the world. She’s normal, man. They’ll listen to her.”

Spider tried to wrench his arm free, and found he couldn’t. Dom’s strength had kicked in, holding him fast. He turned to look at Dom. “Fuck normal,” Spider snarled. “Normal is about lying to yourself and others just to get a little bit ahead. Normal is fucking over the other guy before he fucks you.” He looked back at his wife. “Yeah, she’s normal all right. Normal all around.”

Dom didn’t expect the kick to his knee. His leg buckled, and collapsed, releasing Spider. The woman tried to climb over the bar to escape, but Spider grabbed her leg, pulling her back to the floor.

“Please,” she pleaded. “Don’t kill me. I’m your wife.”

The anger washed away all other thoughts as the guards broke into the room.
