Live Fast, Die Young

One month ago.

Spider glanced over his sunglasses and looked down the alley. One lone streetlamp spread dim, yellow light across the dirty path. “You never told me your name,” he said to the balaclava-wearing man in front of him.

The masked man shrugged. “I’m still working on it.”

Spider stopped walking. After a second, the man in the balaclava noticed he wasn’t walking, and stopped as well. “What?” the masked man asked.

“You don’t even know your own name? What kind of bullshit is that?”

“I know my name! I’m just not, you know, telling you what it is. Yet.”

“Christ.” Spider started walking again. “Just show me where your secret cave is, Batman.”

“Hey, Batman. That’s pretty cool.” He started humming the Adam West theme under his breath as they came to a steel door covered in graffiti. Not-Batman knocked on the door. There was a pause, and then the door opened. “After you, Alfred.”

“I will smack you if you call me that again.” Spider intentionally bumped into the masked man as he stepped into the murky darkness.

Inside the door was an abandoned warehouse. Ancient machinery sat rusting in the corners, while metal crates hung open all over the floor. Perched on one was a woman with green hair. The side of her head was shaved. For a moment Spider thought it was fashionable, but then he could hear the cochlear implant on the side of her head, whispering to her.

The masked man walked past Spider, and moved in front of the woman. She looked up at his arrival. “We’re here,” he said loudly, over-enunciating the words. Even from this distance, Spider could see that her body language was annoyed. Her hands started fluttering in front of her face, ending with a middle finger.

“I don’t know sign language,” Spider said.

The man in the mask pointed to Spider, still facing the woman. “He said he doesn’t know sign language!” he repeated, speaking loudly and slowly. The woman stood up, shoved the masked man, and walked over to Spider. He could see the implant more clearly now, a flat disk on the side of her head, with a wire leading to a device nestled in her ear.

He offered his hand to shake. “Spider,” he said, keeping his voice level but enunciating carefully.

She smiled, her green lips twisting into something genuine and playful. She shook his hand with her right, using her left to make more signs in the air. He tried to pay attention, but for a moment he had no idea what she was saying. Then, suddenly, a voice tickled the back of his mind. N. I. A. M. H. Niamh. The “mh” sound came out like an “v” sound in his head.

“How… your name is Niamh. How did I know that?”

She pulled her hand back, using both of them to speak. Because I’m psychic. Obviously.

* * *

Soon, they were all sitting on metal crates. The masked man, who Niamh called “Dom” found some protein bars. He shared them, but Niamh set hers down. Carefully, methodically, her hands moved through the air, and the voice in Spider’s head translated.

She explained that the two of them were similar experiments of WellBeing International. The word she used was “Deviants,” people who have been twisted from the norm. It all ties into who we are, she explained. I live in my head a lot, so now I live in other people’s heads. Dom here worships masculine strength, so now he’s strong. She glanced at him, and could see Dom was getting bored at being left out of the conversation. He’s certainly not here because of his fecking brains.

“You seem to know a lot about what WellBeing International is doing,” Spider said aloud.

“Me?” Dom said, pointing at himself.

“No, her. You don’t seem to know a lot about anything.”

“Damn right I don’t,” Dom muttered, taking another bite from his protein bar.

Of course I do, Niamh signed patiently. I used to work for them.

“What?” Spider stood up, his fists clenched.

Dom snickered. “You got to the good bit, huh? She tell you why she quit, yet?”

“No. I’m dying to know, though.”

Tell Dom to take off his mask. He knows I can’t read his lips.

“Dom, take you fucking mask off.”

Dom stood up, his body tense. “I ain’t taking it off. Fuck, you need a mask. There’s some metal shit all over your neck and jaw, man.”

Spider leaned forward, as if to get up, and suddenly jumped into Dom, spearing him in the midsection. Surprised, the masked man fell to the ground, with Spider straddling him. He punched Dom twice in the face before standing back up.

“What the fuck was that for?” Dom asked, trying to wipe blood from his mouth through the small hole.

“Because I don’t trust you. I don’t trust either of you.” He pointed to Niamh. “Read my lips. I don’t trust either of you. You got that?”

She nodded, her hands twisting in the air again. Understandable. But understand that I used to work for WBI. I don’t, now, not after they forced me to undergo this.... Her hands hung in the air for a moment, then she shook her head. But before I left, I took something with me. Call it a severance package.

“Whatever. I’m out of here.”

“Man, fuck you,” Dom said, slowly getting back up. “You can’t just kick my ass and then leave.”

“Watch me.” He turned to go.

Even though he wasn’t looking at Niamh anymore, he could hear her voice in his head still. If you’re done, I think you’ll appreciate this. It’s your file.

He turned back to see her holding out a tablet to him. The screen showed a file. He recognized the CDF-2 logo, and his eye was immediately drawn to his name. Snatching the tablet away from her, he quickly scrolled, looking for something, anything, about what happened to him. Finally, he saw it at the end. “Recommendation for Perez experimentation suggested by Mrs. Perez in exchange for relocation services and commission.”

Motherfucker.

Preview... CLADE VARIATIONS
over 4 years ago – Sun, Sep 29, 2019 at 06:35:37 AM

Hello Renegades!

The votes are in, and it was very close, but Clade Variations won out as our topic for the day! Once again, we'll be releasing much more information when the third portion of the kickstarter preview manuscript is posted for backers on Tuesday, but until then, here's Eric with the Awesomeness...

Clade Variations

Eric here. Clade Variations got the most votes, so here are some for your consideration. Although these Variations are more common among members of the Clade in questions, any Deviant can have them – as long as the total Magnitude of other Clades’ Variations doesn’t exceed half the total Magnitude the Broken has.

Cephalist: Body Snatcher (• to •••••)

Subtle

Directed, Tiered, Toggled

The Deviant can insert his consciousness into the body of another person.

At Magnitude •, the Remade chooses a target within range. The Broken rides the senses of his victim, leaving his body comatose until the scene ends or until he ends this Variation as an instant action. If the victim dies, the Variation ends immediately, and the Deviant suffers a minor Instability.

At Magnitude ••, the Remade can read the surface thoughts of the target he is riding. Further, he may leap from one body to another, as long as the new target is one within range of his current victim.

At Magnitude •••, the Deviant may control the actions of his ridden victim for a turn, but if this command causes her to suffer lethal damage or a breaking point, the victim is immune to this effect until the end of the scene.

At Magnitude ••••, choose one:

• Body Swap: The Deviant may swap bodies with his victim until the end of the scene, until he transfers his consciousness to a new target, or until he chooses to return to his own body (as an instant action). Mental and Social Attributes and Scars, as well as all Skills, follow the transferred consciousness. Physical Attributes and Scars stay with the body.

• Puppet Possession:The Broken may seize full control over the victim’s body, leaving her fully aware of the actions she takes while under its effects. If the victim suffers lethal damage or a breaking point while possessed in this way, this effect ends, and the victim is immune to it until the end of the scene. Otherwise, it lasts until the end of the scene, until the Deviant transfers his senses to a new victim, or until he chooses to withdraw his influence as an instant action.

At Magnitude •••••, the Remade develops a perfected version of his Magnitude •••• effect:

• Body Swap: The Deviant may spend a point of Willpower to maintain the body swap until the beginning of the next chapter, potentially maintaining it from chapter to chapter in this way. Any Physical Scars gradually spread to the possessed body at the rate of (6 - Acclimation) Magnitude per chapter. Once the possession ends, the victim’s Physical Scars fade at the same rate. The Remade may instead choose to make the body swap permanent, leaving his victim’s awareness stranded in his old body while he lives out his life in the new one. The Broken may complete a permanent transfer of consciousness once per story without personal consequences, but each additional such transfer inflicts one medium Instability.

• Puppet Possession:The Remade may choose to suppress the victim’s consciousness during the possession. A victim whose consciousness is suppressed will not escape control due to damage or other trauma and will not remember what she did while possessed. Further, the Deviant does not suffer a minor Instability if the host body dies.

The Cephalist perceives all minds as one mind and can easily superimpose hers over a target’s. However, she is utterly dependent on a special serum for which only her Progenitor knows the formula (Dependency, Persistent).

A portion of the Chimeric’s brain has been replaced by that of a telepathic subspecies of dolphin, allowing him to ride the senses of others,, but her body quickly atrophies while she spends time away from it (Deterioration; Controlled; Dexterity).

The Invasive surreptitiously plants a microscopic listening device on the target, which painlessly burrows into his skin, passes into his bloodstream, and takes up residence in the motor control centers of his brain, ready to seize control of his actions for as long as its battery holds a charge. However, the Deviant must physically touch the target and so cannot use it at longer range (Power Failure; Controlled; Dexterity).

Design Notes

My playtest group had a lot of fun with this Variation. I’ll just leave it at that.

Chimeric: Mimicry (• to •••••)

Subtle

Tiered, Toggled

The Deviant can partially and temporarily hide her nature.

When the Deviant activates this Variation, her player may choose any number of Scars of a current Magnitude (i.e. after increases or decreases due to Adaptations or Instability) equal or lower to the Magnitude of Mimicry. This Variation suppresses these Scars and any of their entangled Variations until the end of the scene. While Mimicry lasts, the Deviant does not suffer any of the effects of the suppressed Scars and loses the benefits of the suppressed Variations. Remade with this Variation often undergo a terrifying metamorphosis when its effects end.

This Variation cannot suppress the Scar that is entangled with Mimicry. However, the Untamed Adaptation can diminish or suppress even this Scar, at least temporarily. If a suppressed Scar’s Magnitude becomes higher than that of this Variation (typically due to Instability), it immediately manifests, although this also makes its entangled Variations accessible.

The Cephalist can temporarily isolate those parts of her mind affected by her Divergence, but this leaves her with no memory of what she did during her mental sequester (Tabula Rasa; Controlled, Wits).

The Chimeric possesses an exceptional ability to blend in among Baselines, erasing signs of her Scars. However, on a subconscious level, they sense something “off” about her (Lying Eyes; Persistent).

As other Invasives redirect power away from their Variations to rebuild damaged tissue, he accepts substantial tissue damage to temporarily neutralize problematic Scars (Perilous Variation; Controlled; Dexterity).

Design Notes

The idea behind this Variation is among the few Dave specifically requested we find a way to do. It was originally conceived of as a Universal Variation, but during development, it became increasingly clear that Chimerics excelled at blending in, and so a Variation that helps them do just that seemed like a no-brainer for the Clade.

Coactive: Otherworldly Connection (• to •••••)

Subtle

Perpetual, Tiered

The Deviant has a connection to an alien world.

Establish an origin at the time the Remade develops this Variation. This could be ghosts, animistic spirits, angels, faeries, or anything else — subject to Storyteller approval. This Variation may be purchased any number of times, but each time it applies to a different supernatural origin.

At Magnitude •, the Remade can perceive entities, places, things, and forces connected to the chosen origin. Although this does not come with any specialized knowledge of these phenomena, it serves as an important first step in studying (or avoiding) them.

At Magnitude ••, the Deviant can also communicate with beings who share this origin. In addition, these creatures recognize her inherent connection to their kind, granting her an effective Status among them equal to half Scar Power (rounded up).

At Magnitude •••, the Remade and her immediate possessions can touch or strike these phenomena, even if they are normally insubstantial to the material world. The Broken is still tangible to those in his native world, and he is as vulnerable to the alien entities as they are to him.

At Magnitude ••••, as a Directed effect, the Deviant can exorcize any of these phenomena that has invaded his native world. He can drive the demon out of the boy it is possessing, for example, or banish the abyssal residue that has leaked into the old factory. If driving out a mindless force, this requires an instant action but automatically succeeds — although particularly large or virulent manifestations might require more time and/or a successful Scar Finesse roll, at the Storyteller’s discretion. Exorcising a hostile alien intelligence is a series of Clash of Wills rolls, each requiring an instant action. A loss in this contest causes the combatant to lose a point of Willpower. If the Remade runs out of Willpower, he cannot continue the contest. If the entity runs out of Willpower, it is forced to leave the Deviant’s native world and cannot return until the beginning of the next story (at the earliest).

At Magnitude •••••, the Deviant can force these phenomena into phase with his native world as an instant action. If directed at a sapient entity, this always requires a successful Clash of Wills, and if the attempt fails, the Remade cannot attempt to draw that target into the material world again during the current scene. The Broken can summon one otherworldly phenomenon per story, but each additional summoning during the same story causes a medium Instability.

The Cephalist can interact with otherwise insubstantial beings who have a strong connection to the dreaming world, interacting with them as he does through telepathic senses, but he suffers chronic pain that magnifies the pain of his injuries (Fragility; Persistent).

The Coactive can hear, speak to, and even touch angels that are invisible to everyone else, but their voices are the only ones she can hear. (Sensory Deprivation; Persistent).

The Invasive’s implants include experimental sensors that allow him to see nearby ghosts, although it sometimes interferes with his mental faculties (Glitch; Persistent).

Design Notes

This was another fun design challenge – to create a Variation that represented a Deviant’s connection to a parallel world in a game whose core book would not have the ephemeral entities rules in it.

Invasive: Hidden Compartments (• to •••••)

Subtle

Tiered, Toggled

The Deviant has hidden compartments from which he can pull a wide variety of useful equipment.

At Magnitude •, once per scene, the Remade may remove a weapon, piece of equipment, or materials of Size 1 and Availability no greater than half Scar Power (rounded up).

At Magnitude ••, once per chapter, the Broken may remove an object of Size 1 and Availability no greater than Scar Power.

At Magnitude •••, the Deviant may remove an additional object of Size 1 and Availability ••••• or less. At the Storyteller’s discretion, this may instead be a Size 1 object of occult origin or with supernatural properties, the details of which are determined by the Storyteller (but always relevant to the Broken’s current situation). The Remade may invoke this effect once per story without adverse effects, but each additional such item he produces during the same story causes a medium Instability.

Deviations

Extra Capacity (+1 Magnitude): The objects the Broken removes from these hidden compartments can be as large as Size 2.

High Capacity (+2 Magnitude): As Extra Capacity and exclusive with it, but the objects can be as large as Size 3.

The Chimeric has a pouch similar to those of marsupials, in which he secrets all the small objects he compulsively steals. Its contents are a jumble, however, so he must spend time rummaging around among the junk to find what he needs (Preparation; Controlled; Dexterity).

With a few moments of thought, the Coactive can draw together threads of ectoplasm out of the air in order to construct a solid object, but the Divergence made her less tolerant of pain (Thin Skin; Persistent).

The Invasive’s chest slides open, revealing a hollow, steel chamber suitable for storage. Of necessity, this has forced her internal organs closer to the surface, making them more vulnerable (Hemophilia; Persistent).

Design Notes

This Variation does a great job of conveying the Invasive’s aptitude for having exactly the right tool for the job when they need it. It also illustrates how easy it is to take the basic concept of a Variation (have access to conveniently useful tools) and re-flavor it to fit a different concept, such as weaving a material object out of threads of ectoplasm, conjuring it from somewhere else, or just being so lucky that the equipment you need right now just so happens to be near at hand. And if the Kickstarter reaches $68,000, every backer at the Deviant: The Renegades PDF level and above will have access to even more handy items that you can pull out of your nebulously defined secret compartments.

Mutant: Deadly Ichor (• to •••••)

Overt

Discrete, Reflexive, Toggled

Acid, liquid nitrogen, poison, or some other dangerous substance courses through the Deviant’s veins.

Whenever the Deviant suffers lethal damage from an opponent in melee range, her player may choose for her blood to spatter the attacker. This ichor is built like a melee Lash of equal Magnitude, but the Remade resolves the attack as a reflexive action. Multiple attackers can trigger these counterattacks during the same turn. The Deviant may choose the following as one of the Lash’s effects (i.e. in lieu of one such as Deadly, Envenomed, or Forceful):

Contact:The Ichor’s counterattack responds to any successful Brawl or Weaponry attack, even if it inflicts bashing or no damage (such as a touch attack).

Deviations

Aura (+1 Magnitude): The Ichor’s counterattack responds to any Brawl or Weaponry attack, even one that does not succeed.

Pressurized (+1 Magnitude): The ichor is instead built as a ranged Lash and can also be triggered by successful ranged attacks made by attackers within range.

Retaliatory (+2 Magnitude): As Pressurized and exclusive with it, except even unsuccessful ranged attacks may trigger the Ichor.

For the first hour after she eats a full meal, the Chimeric’s blood acts as a contact poison (Involuntary Stimulus; Involuntary; Stamina).

The steam-powered Invasive vents steam at his attackers, but once the pressure is released, it takes awhile to build up new steam (Cooldown; Controlled; Dexterity)

The Mutant’s blood is a corrosive acid, and even a papercut sends it spraying out of the wound unless she actively stanches the flow (Relentless Variation [Depletion]; Persistent).

Design Notes

At the end of the day, I just couldn’t resist a signature capability from the Alien franchise. I hope I’ve whetted your appetite for Tuesday’s backers-only manuscript preview. I’ve been wanting to share all the Variations and Scars with you for more than a year!

That's DOCTOR Concierge, PhD, to you!

Thanks again to awesome Deviant developer Eric Zawadzki for putting this preview together! If you haven't been following along in the comments (as well as some online discussion), Eric's been doing an amazing job of answering questions, clarifying rules and text, and providing insight into this game. I love the Designer Notes snippets he shared in this preview, and he's been awesome about sharing his process and working to make this game super solid and fun.

Huge virtual round of applause for our tireless developer on this one!! Thanks Eric!

If you voted for Scars and are disappointed that they didn't make the preview today... fear not! They will be revealed in Tuesday's backers-only manuscript preview.

Or...

Since we recently achieved a Stretch Goal target, let's say that we can unleash the SCARS preview if we get partway to our next Stretch Goal experiment - let's say $64,000 by Monday morning at 7:00 AM EDT!

Our next Stretch Goal experiment is...

At $65,000 in funding  – CELEBRATION OF DARKNESS ADD-ON UPGRADE: We’ll add Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras PDF to the list of title options, and reduce the price to $11 EACH for this Add On.

So, if we get to $64,000 in funding, we'll get another special preview on Monday! Otherwise, we'll see you back here bright and early on Tuesday morning, when we unveil the next segment of our kickstarter manuscript for Deviant: The Renegades!

Wow! We're actually ahead of schedule! Very impressive, my Renegades!

(That’s my excuse for typos and a teeny delay in graphic updates on the main page)

This experiment is going well so far!

[EXPERIMENT COMPLETE - TEST SUBJECTS HAVE BEEN APPROVED TO RECEIVE REWARDS]

[SUCCESS] At $59,000 in funding  – KICKSTARTER BACKER T-SHIRT – Hosted on the redbubble store for a limited time, a Deviant: The Renegades-themed shirt will be priced at a steep discount. All backers will be notified when the shirt becomes available.

[SUCCESS] At $62,000 in funding  – SUPPLEMENT EXPANSION: The Clades Companion PDF. Coactives have connections to worlds not our own, and so The Clades Companion PDF will be expanded to include full ephemeral entities rules, including guidelines for creating new Numina and parallel worlds using Deviant’s toolbox approach, as well as guidance on how these beings interact with Variations such as Otherworldly Connection.

[INITIATE NEW EXPERIMENT LOAD PROCEDURE]

At $65,000 in funding  – CELEBRATION OF DARKNESS ADD-ON UPGRADE: We’ll add Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras PDF to the list of title options, and reduce the price to $11 EACH for this Add On.

At $68,000 in fundingSUPPLEMENT EXPANSION: The Clades Companion PDF. Invasives maximize the effectiveness of every tool that passes into their hands, and so The Clades Companion PDF will be expanded to include more equipment, as well rules for high-tech prototypes and shoddy goods and services.

So, remember to share your enthusiasm for this campaign in your social media and within your social circles! Let's get more test subjects... I mean, backers... involved and continue to grow this game line and expand our Clades Companion for everyone!

I Wanna Be Sedated
over 4 years ago – Sat, Sep 28, 2019 at 04:45:11 AM

I Wanna Be Sedated

Six weeks ago.

Sliding back into his old neighborhood was like putting on a comfortable pair of shoes. Spider’s feet knew where to go, even with his brain on autopilot. Without even realizing it, he was standing in front of the old brownstone where he and his wife lived. Back before he went to prison, that was.

He didn’t have a key, so he knocked on the front door for ten minutes until the supervisor opened it. “It’s two in the morning, so you better… oh. You.” She looked like everyone’s grandma — curly white hair framing a mahogany face lined with wrinkles. Everyone thought she was a sweetheart until she lit a cigarette and started talking. Even now, a half-smoked butt dangled from her nicotine-stained fingertips. “Thought you were in prison,” she added.

“Now I’m out,” Spider said.

“Guess so.”

“The cops lost my key, so I need a new one.”

She squinted, looking at him suspiciously. “Why are you wearing sunglasses in the middle of the night?” she asked, ignoring his request.

The sunglasses had become a necessity. Spider spent the past two weeks moving from place to place. He explored his new powers, fixing broken objects to sell for a tenth of what they were worth, or “breaking” expensive technological toys of passersby so he could offer to “fix” them. It was enough to get him a meal or two and a bed most nights. But a few days ago, he told a new tablet to shut itself off. When he walked up to the fashionable hipster and started his patter about fixing it, she screamed and threw the tablet at him, running as fast as she could. In the mirror-black surface of the tablet, he could see that the tiny, inconsequential gears in his pupils had grown, turning both his eyeballs into solid brass bearings. A closer look showed that the eyeballs weren’t completely solid, but rather thousands of tiny gears all perfectly meshed together. He picked up the sunglasses the hipster waif dropped, and kept them on ever since.

“My eyes hurt,” Spider summarized. “You going to let me in or what?”

“Don’t see why I should,” the super said after a drag on her cigarette. “You don’t live here no more.”

“Sure I do. Let me just talk to my wife, and she’ll….”

“That’s what I’m telling you,” she repeated. She poked at his chest with two fingers, the cigarette clenched between then shedding ash with every tap. “She packed her stuff and moved months ago. Got her some ‘luxury accommodations,’ the company said.”

“Company? What company?”

“Company that hired her, I guess. They sent some movers around to pick up all her stuff.” She looked away, flicking the butt into the street. “All your stuff went to the dump, course.”

He knew she was lying. She probably kept the best bits for herself and sold the rest. But he didn’t care about any of that. “What company?” he asked.

“Not sure I should say.”

“Why not?”

“Heard you broke out, on the run. Heard you killed some people to get out.”

“Bullshit!” The word was out of his mouth before he even thought to say it. “Who told you that shit?”

“Ain’t you looked at a computer? It’s all over the news. They sayin’ you a mass murderer.”

The bottom fell out of his stomach. He barely listened as she rambled on about how she didn’t believe it, because she knew he was chickenshit, but it wasn’t good for the building for him to be hanging around, so he needed to get going. It took her threatening to call the cops before he noticed she was talking. His chest was numb as he walked away.

He needed to make a lot of money fast.

* * *

The bell over the pawn shop door tinkled sadly as Spider pushed his way in. The man behind the counter looked up as Spider slapped the money down on the counter.

“I need a gun,” he said simply.

“Need some ID,” the man said abruptly. “There’s a waiting period and all that shit.”

“Don’t have time for that. Got a bag full of near-new electronics in trade.” He reached into the weathered and torn backpack, pulling out laptops, smartphones, and tablets he’d fixed over the past few days.

As the stack of gadgets grew, the man behind the counter looked more interested. “Got an old Saturday Night Special in the back. Hasn’t been fired in years. Doubt it would shoot more than a dozen rounds before it croaked.”

“That’s okay,” Spider said. “Only need to shoot it once.”

He heard the sad little bell tinkle again, and a sad little voice to go with it. “Don’t listen to him. Everything he got is stolen.”

Furious, Spider turned to see a man wearing a black balaclava. “Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t punch you in the mouth.”

The man held up three fingers. “I’ll give you three.” He folded one down. “One, that iPhone you stole has been calling for its owner all morning.”

Spider shook his head. “No, it’s not. I told it not to.”

The strange man paused for a second before folding a second finger down. “Okay, that’s creepy. Stepping around that, the second reason is that trying to shoot yourself with a rusty revolver has about as much chance of killing you as stepping in front of a bus. It ain’t worth it.”

“How in the fuck did you know I was—”

“I know people who know things, okay? Which brings me neatly to point number three.” He folded his last finger down, leaving him holding a fist in the air. “I know where your wife is.”

Spider folded his arms. He’d had about enough of this farce. “Oh yeah? So, tell me.”

The man in the mask smiled. “Two words, buddy: WellBeing International.” He paused, waiting for Spider to say something. “Bet I’ve got your attention now, huh?”
